TYRONE KANE smashed 57 from 33 balls on his home ground as Leinster Lighting stormed to a 158-run victory over the previously unbeaten Northern Knights at Anglesea Road yesterday in the Hanley Energy InterPro Cup.
After his club captain John Anderson had top-scored with 76 for the home side, Merrion all-rounder Kane provided the late order acceleration to take Lightning to a commanding 320 all out from 49.5 of their 50-over allocation.
Former interntional Dom Joyce, another Merrion stalwart, caused merriment by landing a six on the roof of a car belonging to Ian Callender, the doyen of the press box, who had just blogged that with Max Sorensen's departure for 15 Lightning had lost their last big hitter. Joyce made 36.
Eddie Richardson was the pick of the Lightning bowlers, taking 3-26, while captain John Mooney and Anderson chipped in with two wickets apiece as the Knights stumbled to 162 all out in reply.
The size of the victory meant Lightning gained a bonus point and the Leinster side will retain the InterPro Cup if they beat the Knights in the reverse fixture at Waringstown on Sunday.
