Hong Kong, without a win in their previous nine ODIs, got off the mark today in Dubai at the ICC Academy as Mark Chapman led them to a win in the World Cricket League Championship against the United Arab Emirates.
Batting first after winning the toss, Hong Kong had scored 71 when Kinchit Shah was forced to retire hurt with a shoulder injury after colliding with opening partner Anshuman Rath. Rath was out shortly afterwards with only six more runs added to the total when he was stumped by Swapnil Patil.
That wicket brought Mark Chapman to the crease, making his ODI debut. Chapman and Babar Hayat put on 78 for the second wicket before the latter was out for 45. Chapman stayed in though, and dominated the rest of the innings. He brought up his century from 103 balls, becoming just the tenth player to score a century on ODI debut.
He eventually finished the innings unbeaten on 124 from 116 balls, the equal second highest score on ODI debut, behind only Desmond Haynes. The final total for the visitors was 298-4.
After losing Asif Iqbal early on in their reply, the UAE initially looked like they had a chance of chasing their target as Shaiman Anwar scored at better than a run a ball. He scored 74 from 64 balls before he was bowled by Nadeem Ahmed, though his dismissal proved to be the end of the UAE's hopes.
Haseeb Amjad took 3-49 and Anshuman Rath 3-22 as Hong Kong bowled out the hosts for 209, completing a 89 run win. The teams will meet again at the same venue on Wednesday.
