Jersey have secured promotion to World Cricket League Division Four with a thumping win over Nigeria today in sunny weather at Farmer's Field.
With net run rate likely to be a factor, Jersey captain didn't hesitate to put Nigeria into bat when he won the toss in order to put that situation more in his control. The Jersey bowlers played their part too, reducing Nigeria to 59-6 inside the first 15 overs, the only highlight for Nigeria being a cameo 19 from 7 balls by Ademola Onikoyi including two huge sixes.
There was an annoying partnership of 33 between Sesan Adedeji and captain Adekunle Adegbola that lasted almost 10 overs, put bringing back Ben Kynman into the attack provided the breakthrough. Kynman, who bowled with some fire throughout his two spells, took three more wickets to finish with 6-18, the best figures for Jersey in the World Cricket League and ninth best of all time.
The final total for Nigeria was 93. As well as Kynman, Rob McBey also chipped in with two wickets.
The run chase provided little trouble for Jersey. After Gough played out a maiden over to start, the runs soon began to flow with both Gough and Nat Watkins timing their shots well. Neither batsman ever looked in trouble as the ten wicket win was completed from the first ball of the 15th over with Watkins sweeping the ball to the boundary to bring up his fifty.
With Guernsey having only scored 141 batting first in their match against Oman, the net run rate calculations meant that they were unable to overcome Jersey's net run rate, thus booking Jersey's ticket to Los Angeles for Division 4 in November.
Guernsey themselves though still had a shot at promotion if they were to bowl out Oman for 35 or less. Unlikely as it may seem, they gave the Omanis an almighty shock when they quickly had them at 13-4. Oman recovered from that start though and eventually won by 2 wickets. They will join Jersey in Division 4, with the teams playing in the final tomorrow.
Guernsey meanwhile will play Vanuatu tomorrow in a crucial third place play-off match that will decide which team stays in Division 5 and which joins Nigeria and Tanzania in being relegated to regional competitions. Vanuatu themselves were beaten by 7 wickets against Tanzania, meaning that they were level on points with the two African teams though ahead on net run rate.
With the Guernsey v Vanuatu round robin match having been delicately poised before rain ended the match with Guernsey just ahead on DLS, that match could well be a close encounter again, with more riding on it than the final.
