The European World Cricket League Qualifier continued today in the Netherlands, with Germany and Norway making it two wins from two for them and France recording their first win.
In Utrecht, German captain Rishi Pillai won the toss and chose to bat first against Austria, then sat back and watched as his opening pair of Daniel Weston and Mudassar Muhammad put on 176. Muhammad followed his century against France yesterday with another ton as he scored 115 from 203 balls before he was the first man out.
Weston was out for 55 in the next over, but Germany also had Amith Sarma scoring 54 from 40 balls and skipper Pillai scoring 33 from 22 balls to get their score up to 310-5 from their 50 overs. Those two put on an unbroken 81 for the sixth wicket.
In reply, the only Austrian batsmen to get starts were Shadnan Khan with 42 and Imran Asia with 34. The next highest score was 13 and they were bowled out for 142 to lose by 168 runs. Shahil Momin was the pick of the German bowlers with 5-40.
At Voorburg, Norway batted first after winning the toss against Belgium, but could only manage 142 before they were bowled out. Norway's top scorer was Ehtsham Ul Haq with 35, and the pick of the Belgian bowlers was Faisal Khaliq with 4-22. Aziz Mohammed also bowled well, taking 3-28.
Belgium initially looked to be cruising to the target, with Aziz Mohammad scoring 48 from 46 balls before he was the third man out in the 14th over with the score on 70. Run scoring slowed down from then on, but the platform he gave them should have been enough.
Instead, Belgium collapsed. From 90-4 with 29 overs still to play, they were bowled out for just 109 to lose by 33 runs. Waqas Ahmed was the leading bowler for Norway, taking 6-24 from his ten overs.
Sweden also chose to bat first after winning the toss in their match against France at VOC in Rotterdam, and it looked to be a mistake when captain Mitchell O'Connor was bowled for a duck early on. An unbeaten innings of 69 from Abhijit Venkatesh enabled them to score 161 before they were bowled out. Usman Khan, Usman Shahid and Kannaraj Sivaram all took three wickets for the French.
The French innings has an odd look to it from the scorecard. Three batsmen were out for ducks, a further five for single digit scores, but they still managed to win the game thanks to a century from Usman Shahid. He scored an unbeaten 106 to help his team to a two wicket win. They were 77-7 and facing defeat before a 43 run eighth wicket partnership and an unbroken 44 run ninth wicket partnership secured the win.
Tomorrow is a rest day for the tournament and it will resume on Monday. Either Germany or Norway will lose their 100% record as they play each other at VOC in a match that could well prove to decide which team qualifies for World Cricket League Division 5. Belgium play France and Sweden play Austria in the day's other matches.
