Canada ensured that they'll finish ahead of at least one full member by securing their place in the plate semi-final after an Akash Gill century helped them record an 80 run win over Papua New Guinea in Lincoln today.

Canada were put into bat by Papua New Guinea captain Vagi Karaho. They lost both openers cheaply, but once Akash Gill came to the crease at the fall of the second wicket, the runs started to come.

Wickets were still falling, but Gill held firm at the other end. He scored 120 from 115 balls before he was the eighth man out, bowled by Daure Aiga in the 49th over with the score on 247. Another 18 runs came from the last 11 balls of the Canadian innings, giving them a total of 265-8.

Papua New Guinea's reply started well enough with an opening partnership of 68 between Simon Atai and Igo Mahuru. That partnership ended when Mahuru was out for 19.

Atai batted on, scoring 81, but when he was the fifth wicket to fall with the score on 159, the wheels came off the PNG chase.

Atai's wicket was the start of a collapse that saw them lose their last six wickets for just 26 runs as they were bowled out for 185.

Faisal Jamkhandi and Aran Pathmanathan both took three wickets.

Canada will now play in the plate semi-final on Friday, whilst Papua New Guinea play in the 13th place semi-final on Thursday.
