Peter Chase’s five wicket haul combined with an unbeaten 84 from George Dockrell has put Leinster Lightning in a commanding position after the first day of their Championship clash with NW Warriors at Bready.
William Porterfield was the first of Chase’s five victims, yorked for 9, before DD Barr and Aaron Gillespie added 24 in an attritional passage of play.
The stubborn stand was broken in controversial circumstances, with Barr adjudged caught at slip by Andrew Balbirnie.
The Warriors camp clearly unhappy at the decision as they thought the ball hadn’t carried, but umpires Steve Wood and Graeme McCrea conferred and confirmed the dismissal.
Max Sorensen and Peter Chase then ripped through the middle order in a devastating period which saw five wickets fall for just 20 runs.
Sorensen – only in the side because of Tyrone Kane’s finger injury – had Niall O’Brien caught off a leading edge, and bowled Stuart Thompson, while Peter Chase struck twice in four balls, bowling Andy McBrine and having Graham Kennedy caught behind.
In between, George Dockrell trapped Aaron Gillespie lbw to leave the Warriors innings in tatters at 57 for 7 at lunch.
There was a brief counterattack from David Rankin post lunch as he struck three boundaries to top score with a modest 16, but after Ross Allen was bowled by Sorensen, Rankin fell to Chase, and three balls later David Scanlon’s middle stump was sent cartwheeling as the Malahide man recorded his best figures in first-class cricket of 5 for 24.
Sorensen took 4 for 27 while Dockrell (1-7) completed the carnage - the total of 80 being the second lowest in the competition history.
The demons of the Warriors innings weren’t as evident in the second innings, as Leinster punished anything remotely loose to soon make inroads into the modest total.
Stephen Doheny (5) fell to an excellent diving catch by Aaron Gillespie at square leg off Stuart Thompson, but Lightning continued to play positively with John Anderson (28) and Andrew Balbirnie (35) finding the boundaries with regularity.
They had added 49 when David Scanlon (2-27) trapped Anderson in front, and soon after had Simi Singh caught at first slip by Andy McBrine. Graham Kennedy then produced a peach of a delivery that clipped Balbirnie’s off stump, and at 78 for 4, three wickets had fallen for just six runs.
Lightning captain George Dockrell entered the fray and proceeded to take the contest away from Warriors producing a series of powerful drives to put his team firmly in the ascendancy.
He added 49 with Sean Terry (14), and although Lorcan Tucker (5) fell cheaply, Max Sorensen played an unfamiliar holding role as Dockrell remained firm.
Despite two breaks for rain, Dockrell proved unfazed, striking nine fours as Lightning ended the day on 193 for 6, a lead of 113.
Dockrell has already his highest first-class score, and on this form looks likely to complete a maiden first-class century.
