IRELAND had to settle for 10th place at the U19 World Cup after a tentative batting display in Trinidad yesterday saw the Boys in Green soundly beaten by the United Arab Emirates in a one-sided Plate final.
Jack Dickson continued his fine form from the semi-final with a top score of 40 but a combination of tight spin bowling by the Emiratis, poor shot selection and a few moments of madness led to Ireland being bowled out for 122 in 45.3 overs.
Uganda had come close to defending a similar score against the UAE earlier in the Plate but a victim each for Jamie Forbes and Matthew Humphries was all Ireland could manage as they were defeated by eight wickets with a whopping 24 overs to spare.
Skipper Tim Tector won the toss and decided to bat but faced with a five-spinner attack his batting unit failed to find any momentum and were unable to put together a partnership bigger than 33 runs as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
Josh Cox was bowled on the back foot for six, Tector himself only registered a single before nicking one to the keeper and after starting with purpose Philippe le Roux was stumped for 14.
Dickson’s mix of solid defence or all out attack delivered two huge sixes in his 83-ball innings, Scott MacBeth also cleared the ropes before he played inside a straight one and any realistic hopes of silverware ended with two crazy run-outs.
