North West Warriors Manager Ian McGregor Challenges His Team to Come Out Fighting on Day Two Following a disappointing first day in Dublin, Manager of the North West Warriors, Ian McGregor issued a challenge to his players to come out fighting on day two of the opening Inter-provincial match against the Leinster Lightning.
Barry Chambers: Ian not the greatest of days for the Warriors, but I guess it was a very bad toss to lose, conditions very difficult early on?
Ian McGregor (North West Warriors Manager): I think the toss was pretty crucial, and overall I think we have no doubt that we would have done exactly the same thing, given the overhead conditions and the state of the pitch. But it's only one day of three.
Barry Chambers: Yeah, that's the beauty of the three day game, you have a chance to bounce back, but it's going to be very difficult from this position. They're looking very strong Leinster Lightening?
Ian McGregor: They are, and obviously for most of our guys this longer format of the game is something new to them. Today has been a steep learning curve for the majority of them. But the fact that it is a longer version, it gives them that opportunity to bounce back over the next two days, which I'm sure they will.
Barry Chambers: Yeah Scott Campbell and Iftikhar Hussain bowled well at the end. That might give you a little bit of optimism for tomorrow?
Ian McGregor: Well I think we always knew, and word was that the pitch would suit the spinners the longer that it went on. We maybe just didn't anticipate that our spinners would be bowling as soon as what they actually did. But however, as you say, towards the end you can see that there's definitely something in it. And it has given us a bit of encouragement.
Barry Chambers: And in the batting we were looking down the barrel at 89 for 7, but Johnny Thompson and Andrew Riddles have at least given the bowlers something to bowl at?
Ian McGregor: Well if you look at both Johnny and Aggie (Andrew Riddles), they bat high up in club cricket, so like they're not a genuine eight, nine. So we knew that we had the strength in depth. That has let the guys at the top order see that with a bit of attitude and a bit of application, that batting is possible on this wicket. And if given the opportunity in the second innings, I know there's four or five guys downstairs who are certainly looking to make amends.
