Sorensen stars as Leinster Lightning crush North West Warriors

Max Sorensen claimed the Man of the Match Award as his Leinster Lightning side proved much too strong for the North West Warriors in their RSA T20 Trophy clash at Sydney Parade.

The Hills paceman followed up his five wicket haul against Australia A last week with 3 for 13, including the wickets of Rankin (0) and Hussain (4) in his first over.

When Brian Allen fell in his second over, the scoreboard read 8 for 4, with the Warriors in complete disarray.

Stuart Thompson (17) and Andrew Riddles (12) led a mini revival, before Riddles was brilliantly run out by Barry Mc Carthy's athletic throw from long leg. The Pembroke man then bowled Ricky-Lee Dougherty for 0 - the fourth duck of the innings as the Warriors continued to implode.

Albert van der Merwe (2-12) ended Thompson's resistance, and it was left to Andrew McBrine (27*) to give the innings any semblance of respectability.

The Donemana all-rounder was left stranded with 11 balls unused when Gareth Burns was dismissed by Richardson (2-20) with the scoreboard reading just 78.

An eventful first over of the Lightning reply saw 13 runs, including 7 wides, but also the wicket of Pat Collins (6), bowled off an inside edge from Andy Britton.

When Alex Cusack (2) fell to Stuart Thompson, the Warriors were at least showing some signs of fight.

However Bill Coghlan played some lovely trademark cover drives, hitting six fours in his 27 from just 22 balls, before being trapped lbw by Gareth Burns with just 13 needed.

He and his Clontarf colleague Andrew Poynter (28*) had added 41 in just 26 deliveries to steer Lightning towards their modest victory target. Poynter had taken 18 from Warriors skipper Ifftikhar Hussain's solitary over, including successive sixes.

The seven wicket win was achieved with nine overs to spare and Leinster Lightning will no doubt be seeking a much more competitive contest when they take on the Northern Knights in the second match at 5pm today.
