The weather once again proved a poor friend to Leinster Lightning yesterday - but in the end they found enough gaps in the clouds to finish off the Northern Knights.

Last month the rain foiled their attempt to beat NW Warriors and steady showers again held them up for almost three hours yesterday.

Just one wicket was needed but Zac Rushe and Phil Eaglestone held them up for a further half an hour before John Mooney struck.

Lightning coach Trent Johnston praised his team, for whom everyone made a contribution.

He also described the Knights' batsman Chris Dougherty as "outstanding" but had some criticism for the sides his team has met this summer.

Responding to suggestions that there be two Leinster sides, he disagreed.

"I don't think so - I think a fourth side should come from Munster - but its got to come down to commitment from the northern teams.

"The carrot is there that if you do well in these games you could play for Ireland and make a career out of cricket.

"But the hard work has to be put in.

"Down here we have full the support of the local clubs and the 21 guys in the squad are committed.

"They can see the light at the end of the tunnel."
