Steady rain forced an early abandonment after tea of the second day's RSA Inter-Provincial Championship game between the Northern Knights and North West Warriors at Osborne Park.

The Knights had been firmly in control after reducing the Warriors to 69 for 4 in response to their first innings total of 301 for 9 declared.

Rory McCann had made an unbeaten 32 from 59 balls (4 fours, 1 six) to ensure maximum batting points for his side, but the NW were equally happy at that juncture as they too gained maximum points for taking nine wickets inside 100 overs.

Nathan Waller (15), James Cameron-Dow (3) and Allen Coulter (1) falling victim to Gareth Burns, Peter Connell and Iftikhar Hussain respectively.

Top order collapses have been a regular feature of the Warriors season and yet gain this proved to be the case.

David Rankin (4) edged the impressive Phil Eaglestone to Rory McCann, and the Waringstown left-armer claimed a second soon after, when Kamran Sajid drove loosely to Craig Ervine at gully.

16 for 2 became 23 for 3 as Andy McBrine presented McCann with a routine catch off the bowling of CSN paceman Allen Coulter.

It could and perhaps should have been 26 for 4, as Rory McCann just failed to hold on to a Jason Milligan edge.

Niall McDonnell and Milligan (18*) set about repairing the early damage and had added 46 when disaster struck to what was to be the last ball of the day. Warriors skipper McDonnell got a thin edge to a James Cameron-Dow delivery to be dismissed for 26.

Heavy, persistent rain meant the scoreboard remained 69 for 4, with the Warriors 232 runs adrift when play was formally abandoned for the day at 4:20pm.

The teams will resume tomorrow at  11am.
