MAX SORENSEN and Fintan McAllister shared a last-wicket stand of 93 at Bready to give Leinster Lightning the upper hand over North-West Warriors on day two of the InterPro Championship match in Tyrone.
After Eddie Richardson had polished off the home side for 176 before lunch, Craig Young found pace and a bit of movement to grab five wickets and reduce the visitors to 127-9 – only to watch Sorensen and McAllister mount their stirring recovery.
Young spent the winter working with Aussie pace legend Craig McDerrmott in Queensland and the fruits of his labours were clear to see as he ripped through the Lightning top order, hitting the stumps three times. Young looks the natural heir to Boyd Rankin in Ireland's squad for the World Cup.
When Sorensen was finally caught for 42 – leaving McAllister 48 not out – the visitors had 220 on the board.
John Mooney took two wickets in four balls, then bowled in-form David Barr and had Tabish Khan caught at third slip in a spell of 4-8 as the Warriors fell apart in the final hour.
The last word was left to the batting heroes, though, as McAllister dived down the leg-side to poach a chance off Sorensen and send the home side to bed on 20-5, still trailing by 24 runs with one day to play.
