LEINSTER Lightning confirmed their dominance over the three-day format in the Newstalk Interpro at Trinity College yesterday.
The home side bowled out the Northern Knights with an hour remaining, winning by 157 runs.
The testing pitch required superior technique and several batsmen were found wanting. There were only three 50s scored in the four innings, and Andrew Poynter made two of them, continuing his fine club form and impressing national coach Phil Simmons.
Lightning batted-on first thing yesterday morning, adding another 20 to the target but losing Poynter (62) and Simmi Singh (48).
The extra runs put Northern Knights out of the game, but the Ulstermen battled hard to prevent John Mooney's men from winning it.
The Fingallian seamers, Mooney, Eddie Richardson and Max Sorensen, had dominated the first innings and were quickly on top again.
Sorensen bowled with fire and looks to be in as good a form as he has been in two seasons.
Richardson nipped out Chris Dougherty and Imad Wasim in his first six overs, but Andrew White and Nick Larkin staged a recovery before a crucial dismissal before lunch.
"It was a tough game, a lot of bodies are pretty sore," said Lightning captain John Mooney. "We played really solid cricket from 1 to 11."
"Poyntsie's attitude was amazing, he really showed he's a senior player and how good a batter he is."
Larkin was run out for 40 before James Shannon came in to play an innings of great character. He resisted playing shots and faced 149 balls for just 27 runs, finally falling to Albert van der Merwe.
"We let ourselves down with the collapse in the first innings and we didn't really put the partnerships together today", said Knights captain Andrew White.
