Scotland and Oman have secured their place in the so-called first round of the men's T20 World Cup in Australia after wins over the UAE and Hong Kong respectively.
Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer won the toss against the UAE and chose to bat first, with him and George Munsey setting a great platform with an opening partnership of 87 before the skipper was out for 34. Munsey, who played a number of fine reverse sweeps went on to score 65 from 43 balls before he was brilliantly caught by Rameez Shahzad with a leaping one handed catch reminiscent of the famous Ben Stokes catch against South Africa during the ODI World Cup earlier this year.
A brutal 48 from 18 balls by Richie Berrington helped Scotland reach a commanding total of 198-6 from their 20 overs, and the home side never even got close.
Rameez Shahzad batted well for 34, but once the slower bowlers came in, the runs dried up. Mark Watt was the pick of the slower bowlers with 3-21, with even Calum MacLeod looking dangerous and picking up his first T20I wicket since 2013. Safyaan Sharif took the last two wickets to fall, also finishing with 3-21 and the UAE were bowled out for 108, losing by 90 runs.
The second match of the day between Oman and Hong Kong saw a remarkable turn around by Oman after a horror start. After collapsing to 42-6, Jatinder Singh led a fantastic recovery, batting throughout the innings to score an unbeaten 67. He was assisted by Aamir Kaleem's 17 and a blistering nine ball cameo by Naseem Khushi which saw him score 26.
A total of 134-7 then, which should have been chaseable by an in-form Hong Kong team. But their innings started in even worse fashion than that of Oman as the first five wickets were down with just 18 runs on the board. Scott McKechnie offered some resistance with 44, but in the end there was too much for the lower order to do.
Bilal Khan bowled superbly at the start of the innings as Hong Kong collapsed, and again at the death, finishing with 4-23 as Hong Kong were restricted to 122-9 and lost by 12 runs.
Scotland and Oman will meet tomorrow in the fifth place play-off, whilst Hong Kong and the UAE now regroup ahead of their next tournaments. The UAE are set to host an ODI tri-series against Scotland and the USA in December, whilst Hong Kong will be travelling to Oman for a CWC Challenge League six team tournament against Kenya, Uganda, Jersey, Bermuda and Italy.
